Julia Isen, RN MS FNP
ASSOCIATE CLINICAL PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAN FRANCISCO (UCSF)
Julia is deeply committed to providing personalized and comprehensive care to her patients. With over 20 years of experience in primary care, women's health, and bioidentical hormones, as well as integrative and holistic medicine, she recognizes that "great health" requires achieving emotional, psychological, physical, and cognitive well-being in addition to optimal management of one's medical conditions. Julia recognizes that healthy and vital living requires attention to all of these.
In alignment with this approach, she encourages patients to share their treatment preferences and concerns in creating the optimal health plan that fits their needs and individual circumstances. This creates a proactive, preventive and personalized medicine approach to their health care.
Women’s care in general, menopause, and perimenopause have been relatively absent in medical care for many years. Over the past 10 years, Julia added to her primary care practice a focus on women in midlife and the menopause transitions. This includes hormone replacement therapy and supplements, cardiovascular health, bone health, sexual health, brain health, and genitourinary health. She also addresses all of the symptoms that can affect women during this time such as hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes, weight gain, decreased sex drive, pain with sex, joint pain, and brain fog. She helps to educate and empower women so they can be healthy, happy, informed, and empowered.
Julia is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Associate Clinical Professor. She worked in the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program (GPCNP) at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF) since 1998 (full-time from 2015-2018) and then in 2018 moved over to the Family Nurse Practitioner program. She also worked at The Women’s Health Center, Primary Care at UCSF for 15 years prior to working at BlueWave Medicine.
In addition, she has supervised UCSF Nurse Practitioner students at the UCSF General Internal Medicine clinical practice, UCSF Women's Health Center, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center since 1998.
Julia is interested in international health and volunteers providing medical care in Nepal with the Himalayan Rescue Association and in Tibet with One Path Medical. In 2017, she joined the board of Directors of One Path Medical, a 501c3 focused on providing medical care in Tibet. More locally, she is involved with “One Kid at a Time”, a 501c3, located in Marin City, California which focuses on preparing young at-risk people for successful and fulfilling lives by improving health and wellness through lifestyle change and psychosocial support. The foundation also provides programs for obesity and obesity-related diseases.
Julia graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of San Francisco where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing, a Family Nurse Practitioner degree, and a Clinical Nurse Specialist certification. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Biology at Northeastern University. Julia has been a member of the AANP since 1997 and speaks conversational-level Spanish.
